Aviation Branching Procedure

Postby Grumble_and_Grunt Fri Jul 24, 2009 7:17 am

OCS generally does not receive any Aviation allocations. Any Candidate who desires to be considered for Aviation must turn in a packet to specifically request Aviation. That packet is due to the Cadre Chain of Command (First Sergeant) NLT COB on Friday of week 3. Candidates must have completed and passed a flight physical prior to attending OCS. The packet must include a copy of the flight physical, AFAST, and any previous flight training or hours (flight log). This packet will be forwarded to HRC Aviation Branch for their decision.

Generally speaking, if Aviation is your fondest dream, you would be well advised to submit a packet for WOCS for AV through your recruiter if you are a civilian, or through your CoC if you are a soldier.

I am currently on week 4 in 501-09 with my flight packet submitted. It was a warrant flight physical (1W flight physical) and I don't know if I will be accepted to IERW as an 2LT. I will update if it's a sucess or not. Honestly I agree that if you can go warrant then officer it's the way to go.

For those who are trying for OCS AV. You need to come to OCS with a passing flight physical and a passing AFAST score. You CAN NOT take these while at OCS! When your class starts the specialty packets (MI, MSC, AV, EN) you need to get with your S1/Cadre for instructions and packet template.

Required stuff for flight packet: Flight Physical, AFAST score sheet, Copy of college transcripts, Logbook (if you have one), Personal statement saying why you want to be an Aviator.

Submit all this in the same timeframe as MI packet and wait, if your selected you will be notified by cadre. Good luck to all potential OCS aviators. RUN FAST, STUDY HARDER!

Less than 10hrs. but I didn't submit a logbook. It's possible to branch AV, I am thankful for such an opportunity. I can't wait to live the dream.

HAHAHAH!!! You want your dreams to come true? Go to Disney Land. If you are ready to get treated like a private for 19+ months, then come on down.

Had to break balls on that.....

Hugs and stuff. :D :D :D :D

When I add up all the benefits of what's to come, I can take feeling like a private for as long as possible.

How does one set up the flight physical? Is this done prior to basic or in between basic and OCS for those not going the WO route?

Thanks.

Per my Recruiter when I asked about AV, I was told it was before you even submit your packet.

It needs to be done before you ever ship out. I don't know all the details but you talk to your recruiter about getting a flight physical and getting it endorsed by Ft. Rucker. You also need to take the AFAST test.

Well per the advice of numerous people on this board, I just scheduled my first flight instruction appointment tomorrow. I have already taken my AFAST (126) as well as passed my flight phys. Any suggestions about the amount of hours I should be shooting for?

Just to add, in Alpha Company we had three OC's submit a 4187 for AV. All three had the flight physical and an AFAST score of around 130. They were told that the BN Commander shot their packets down because none of them had flight experience. Moral of the story: Flight time really helps.

Okay quick question. I was just looking through my entire packet, which included my flight phys. I think it is all there, but I cannot be sure. It should all be scanned into the system already shouldn't it, so I could get a copy of it? How would I go about requesting another copy of it in order to make sure I have a full one under my arm when I go to Benning?

Real quick: reminder for all of those who are just joining the service. Sometimes decisions are made by one person, with their philosophy on what's right. We call that "Policy". That does not mean it’s regulation. So, lesson learned is: for regulation to matter, you must have enough to beat "policy". Come to OCS with your "A" game already on the table. If you come to OCS expecting someone to help you get to your "A" game, you probably don't deserve to be in the game in the first place. That's why "policy" exists. Do the extra work, work your ass off, and maybe if you're lucky, you'll be paid by the piper.

Get Daryl Dixon over here with his crossbow...it's a zoooooombie thread. That was a seriously non sequitur stream of consciousness.

8O LoL. Non sequiter indeed. I personally believe if the BN CMDR is not a pilot he probably shouldn't be doing that.

I am sorry to contribute to the previous resurrection of a zombie thread, but I have a question about the Fort Rucker endorsement - is there a physical "seal of approval" that should be evident on the flight physical documents? My husband completed his Class 1 physical prior to shipping and just classed up with Alpha Co, where they again mentioned a seal or stamp from Rucker. His recruiter confirmed that it had been submitted to and approved by Rucker; however, we do not see anything that would indicate this on the physical copy received. Should there be an additional page from Rucker, or a stamp indicating that it has been received, processed, and endorsed? Thank you.

Let’s resurrect this old post, shall we?
So I’ve been reading on here that within the process of branching Aviation, the applicant needs to fill out a DA form 4187 by the third week of OCS. This seems odd to me because my understanding of DA 4187 was for a change of MOS. That being said, would this step still apply for non prior service applicants coming directly from College and BCT?
I have a Rucker approved Flight Physical, got a 64 on my SIFT, 93 on my ASVAB and have already signed my 09S contract. Clarification would be greatly appreciated!

This would still apply for you. The people here, no matter what background are submitting packets for Aviation. The 4187 is apart of that packet. You are already ahead of the game with your physical and testing complete. For a long time they didn't allow packets for Aviation while in OCS but since the very recent surge it's been happening. The packets have to be in by week 3-4 of the cycle.

DA Form 4187 (Personnel Action) is a form for a whole host of personnel actions. Hence the name. Including the generic "Other" action. 4187s have been used for branch requests at OCS, particularly Aviation, for a long time.
